3d base relief from 3d model - scam or possible

I did this once for a Nike project, but it was not an easy process. This seem to suggest it could be

I have done something similar with Modo and ZBrush. With Modo You can project (background constraint) mesh to a original model (that have scaled in projection axes) and background plane. After projection detail transfer is simple. This is pretty straight forward process and result is almost same. I think this can also be done with 3D-Coat :)
It's always good start to realize that you don't know everything.

Yes Phil. 3DC works fine.
As all these will probably be exported as normal or bump maps, I wonder... crazybump app could be a solution in lot of cases.
