Aircraft - Après Moi Le Déluge (After me, the flood)
Two Spitfire MkXIVe escort Lancaster B (QR-M), MkIII No. 61 Squadron PA474 "Mickey the Moocher" across foreign borders.
I've worked really hard on the colours and placement of the back plate and the planes, to convey the sense of darkness and doom they are all heading towards.
Software used:
LW10.1
3DCoat
Photoshop
Cheers,
Ricky.

For me 3DCoat helped a lot with the normal maps and swapping between PS for further detail.

To say more, it would be good to see the datails and a reference.
The only point I could say is, that there could be a little bit more athmosphere color(depth) on the planes behind the bomber. But this are critics at a high level...

I like the final composition. The result looks very nice.

Thanks Taros for dropping in and giving me your feedback.
I acquired a lot of reference material from the web, mostly from searching 'Mickey the Moocher'. For really detailed parts, like the engines, I found a lot of reference shots from airshows. I had to re-design the decal (Mickey) in Illustrator, as I couldn't find a decent reference image.
The image map is only 4k and the model wasn't that detailed. It was clear from the start that the position of the Lancaster and the mood I wanted to create, would mean a lot of the detail would be lost (rivets around the engine panels, bump underneath the bomber)
3DCoat was used to do the normal maps (rivets and panel lines) plus painting camo. Where 3DC really helped out, was being able to paint makers where the smoke, dirt dropped between different parts of the UVs. The built in interaction with PS, then allowed me to create more detail on the maps.
I rendered out all 3 planes separately and then re-comp'd in PS. I also applied a green/grey colour filter to the final shot (which is probably why the Spitfires has lost a bit of colour depth) as I really wanted to capture the cold and dark mood. I also applied lens blur to each of the Spitfires. And finally I added a light kicker layer, noise and bloom.
Attached is the original (reduced in size), before post processes.
Cheers,
Ricky.

The Spitfires look great. Hope you'll use them in another
compo. They are rather small here
(yeah, they have to keep the distance to avoid crashing into the flying fortress).
Keep on the good work.

Nice lighting and models. Could be a comic cover.

Thanks for your comments. Yes, I suppose the colour shading does give it that cartoon/annual/AirFix illustration look.
Regards,
Ricky.

Thanks Michalis, praise indeed. No, I'm sorry, my next model will not be a plane. I want to do a post-apocalyptic scene using 3DC and Lightwave, which will push my skills to the level. So busy at the moment, I will need to put some time in.
Ricky.
