[Solved] Transfer Texture maps from one model UV layout to a duplicate of the same model with different UV's?

Hey there,

Topic Title pretty much describes what I'm trying to do.

The texture dept here have a model with a texture painted on an old UV layout.

The UV layout has since been changed and instead of re-painting the

textures again from scratch on the new UV layout, I was wondering

how one would go about transfering texture maps from the old UV layout

to the new UV layout.

We thought the texture baking tool could to this, but after trying

all of the different options we're out of ideas. Would be great

if someone could point us in the right direction.

you can export out your model with the old UVs, change them in the software you're comfy with,

save the new .obj with new UVs, import that new model into 3DC.

hope it helps! :)

That's fine for changing UV's but without re-projecting/baking your textures to the new UVs, you're stuck having re-paint all over again. That's what the OP was trying to avoid.

@AbnRanger

in you video,it seems that you have several 3DCoat files opened simultaneously and some are minimized.

is this correct?is it a Windows only feature?

thanks

Yes, those were multiple instances of 3D Coat, minimized...in order to save time showing the different examples.

that's news to me...below is an image showing UVs transferring just fine and retaining paint/deform layers (small degradation that

should be pretty easy to smooth out in the texture maps)

*edit* actually, I think that degradation is a UV-seam bug in the latest 3.5.21A version.

Could you record a video screen grab of your steps? I followed the steps you outlined and got nothing.

I stand corrected if your technique works, but it's hard to imagine how a texture map applied to one UV can be correctly mapped to a completely different one...no matter what sort of voodoo you try, without some form of re-projection. It would be a good addition to the tutorial section.

Hi. One more tip for this issue:

1. Export the model with the updated UVs to a obj file.

2. Now move to 3Dcoat and open your old working scene, if not already done.

3. Go to the Textures menu inside the paint room und use "Import UV".

4. Use the new obj file as the source for the new UV information.

-> Your old uvs will be replaced now. That's it!

Important: This works with identical models only- the vertex positions have to be at the exactly same place.

The big advantages of this method:

- No rebaking process needed!

- No paint layers get lost! (This is unique in the texture application market as I know)

Pretty cool tip. Would make a nice tutorial, eh (hint, hint :D )?
