It would be nice if 3D coat could link with Octane or similar for a quick realistic render of model.
Octane seems a nice one, because of price and the fact it works on Windows,Mac and Linux platforms.
It would be nice if you could render it from within 3DCoat as an option within the 3dcoat renderer.

Some other free render apps that would be good are -
Freestyle (Non-Photorealistic, Cartoon and drawings style etc) - http://freestyle.sourceforge.net
LuxRender (Popular realistic renders, has various app plugins already) - http://www.luxrender.net
Sunflow (Not as updated as others but still a very nice render, java based) - http://sunflow.sourceforge.net
POV-Ray (Has been a round for a while, nice renders) - http://www.povray.org
Blender has direct render support for most of these to render with i think so i think 3DC could also do this. If not direct rendering then exporters to the formats they use would be great.
By the way with app links it should be easy now for developers to make them so you could maybe ask on the Octane forums or contact them. Hopefully the rendering app developers will start to add support for 3DC and make plugins/app links, this would be great.

In the meantime my current workflow would be 3D-Coat to blender (hows that plug in going? ) and then using the plug in octane has for Blender to Octane. One of the advantages of that vs. 3D-Coat direct is that you can export your obj files (triangulated) into Octane. I have tried regular mesh obj files and triangulated meshes are definately required..

I too have invested in a licensed copy of Octane Render... However, my wait for results is a bit longer, as I'm STILL waiting for NVIDIA to come up with an AFFORDABLE card, with suitable drivers for Macintosh..
I also vote for Octane link/exporter. Bought it some time ago when it was with a rebate. Now it's my main renderer for stills. Can't even tolerate any cpu renderer now.
However, the various render samples on Octane's Gallery page are just STUNNING....Worth waiting for...
However in advance of a fully proofed bridge between the two programs---If somebody can detail EXACTLY how to specify "parts" of an object built in 3DC,
so that their textures can be "given more oomph" using Octane Render's nodal texture window...
I'd love to know just how that (is supposed to?) work properly! LIkewise the management of UV's image maps, shaders, textures and "all of that stuff",
so that a project can all be nicely "packaged" for storage, or export to another platform or workstation, without "missing something" needed in the package
(BOTH the 3DC components, AND the "tweaked" textures and lighting coming in from Octane Render!)
----Everybody talks about "workflow", but there don't seem to be any DEAD SIMPLE, "start-to-finish" EXAMPLES for newbies to get up-to-speed with the wider aspects of that process...
Say, take a CUBE primitive, all the way through the steps in 3DC, then into Octane, then to the render itself!
Be that as it may---on GENERAL principles, just from what I've seen so far.... I'd LOVE to see a well-integrated "plug-in" for 3DC that would call up an Octane Render window,
---with the nodal textures all ready to go onto the 3DC model, to do final "tweaking" of textures and then a final render!

cycles, is in alpha stage but can do a lot they are working cycles with OPENCL, CUDA and CPU, render, so can be a beast!!!
I made a test using my laptop core 2 duo and nvidia card, I rendered a short animation, half of frames using CPU half usin GPU, AT THE SAME TIME............ WOOWWWW, no problem, smooth
give it a try.......

Any1 knows how i could render it from within 3DCoat as an option within the 3dcoat renderer ?
Does 3DC have a renderer API, or at the very least a scripting interface that an exporter could be built with ?

Kerkythea is another free un-bias renderer, Last version update 2008.
Wings3d has a exporter for it. Your low-polygon models you can import into wings 3d, then export out to Kerky... Kerky supports obj files too.
Blender Cycles renderer another un-bias renderer, If you have a fairly new nvidia card, you can use your GPU for rendering, in most cases you can quite a speed improvement in rendering speed. Plus there is the Blender regular renderer. Don't forget the 3DCoat blender Applink too...
You can render Lux and YafaRay renders inside Blender with plug-ins for them
Plus Daz3d is giving away free for a limited time

LuxRender v1.0RC2 release speed up the render time a LOT, its a HUGE advance ;D, im using it with blender.
Blender cycles don't support normals maps, may be in a future? Its one development step in the cycles road map.
And 3DCoat blender Applink for 2.63 is broke :P

Vue pionner 10 is ready for download and free too, if you like to try. The Render size is limited to HDTV resolution... but you can buy the license to unlock render sizes restriction.

But I decided to switch back to Houdini's Mantra renderer, I found Octane render a bit too limited.. you dont have support for particles, volumes, huge data sets, and Ptex.. I use these three quite often.
Houdini's Mantra renderer is really worth checking out if you like to use Ptex, and/or displacement maps..
And it goes along hand in hand just fine with 3DCoat..

It's a really nice renderer and will probably go commercial a few years down the road, but for now it's free to any Max users interested in testing it and lots of great examples can be found on their forum after signing up.
