Reputable Contributor digman Posted June 5, 2013 Reputable Contributor Report Share Posted June 5, 2013 There has been a request for Blender tutorials, Here is some that will keep you chewing on Blender for awhile. Covers basics, Cycles, Animation, Compositing, Particles, Fluids etc etc... http://cgcookie.com/blender/ Look under tutorials in the heading, there are number of videos for new users of blender... excellent site. http://www.blenderguru.com/ Andrew Price's site another great resource for blender users Sci Fi Animator http://www.youtube.com/user/FirstGradeCalculus/videos?flow=grid&view=1 Do not worry about the link as it will bring you to his list of Blender tutorials, each section has a number of tutorials. I like his tutorials, ranging from basic to Advanced, Good teacher here... David Ward http://www.youtube.com/user/ward7299/videos, You have to dig a little through his videos till you find the one you are interested in. He is also a good teacher... Note: Some videos in the above links are older so the information might be outdated or changed somewhat but nearly all the videos are a very good resource. http://www.blenderartists.org/forum/ A a very good community forum run by Blender Cookie. Go there to get answers to questions and get inspiration from some of the great blender artist... If I can get enough energy maybe michalis and I could make a 3Coat to Blender tutorial... michalis knows the node system better than me... Just to give you a heads up, the blender Applink does not yet support blender cycles. You still have to load your textures manually... If you are adventurous and want to check out the newest builds, there are a couple of places to go, I like this one... http://builder.blender.org/download/
Reputable Contributor digman Posted June 5, 2013 Author Reputable Contributor Report Share Posted June 5, 2013 I'm having trouble with the links which is weird, working on them now. EDIT: Fixed, they all are working correctly.
Advanced Member bisenberger Posted June 5, 2013 Advanced Member Report Share Posted June 5, 2013 Blender keeps getting better all the time. I was using modo, but Blender seems to do all the things I was using modo for only better. 3D-Coat, Blender, and MoI make a pretty impressive toolset. Check nervouschimp's post in this thread on the Luxology forum to see his workflow for going from MoI to 3D-Coat: http://forums.luxology.com/topic.aspx?f=4&t=77615&page=
Reputable Contributor AbnRanger Posted June 5, 2013 Reputable Contributor Report Share Posted June 5, 2013 Thanks for the links, guys. What I was suggesting in the other thread, was a walk-through of 3D Coat (via Applink) > Blender for a basic material and lighting setup of a character to be rendered for a demoreel turntable clip. Perhaps we could pose him in 3D Coat (I could do that part of the tutorial), or have someone from the Blender community who is good at setting up rigs (just a basic rig, to pose...or slight movement/animation in the turntable animation). I suggested using my little Gollum Character. I can sculpt a cave opening with some rocks just outside...so a basic (quadruped like) walk cycle from the cave opening to being crouched over a large rock. Kind of an animated turntable. This would be a good chance to showcase Blender Cycles and even their rigging tools (for basic posing or animated turn tables)
Advanced Member puntoit Posted June 5, 2013 Advanced Member Report Share Posted June 5, 2013 (edited) Hi Digman, thanks for this helpful list. I also like the idea AbnRanger proposed. Edited June 5, 2013 by puntoit
Reputable Contributor digman Posted June 5, 2013 Author Reputable Contributor Report Share Posted June 5, 2013 @AbnRanger, ah, a man with a mission, We need that to get a tutorial out to the 3DCoat community... I'm sure michalis will jump in here and offer a few ideas as well... Sorry for being an old stick in the mud but health reasons sorta been punching me around lately but will do what I can to help. Another tutorial would be to show how to use Cycles and the applink in the voxel room to check your sculpting under GI lighting or different lighting conditions as you work on it ... Great for seeing what areas get eaten away under GI lighting. As michalis saids, It helps you do dig deeper into the sculpt... I can handle that one. Now concerning the applink, you can load your model into Blender and the correct textures will be loaded for the Internal renderer but not for Cycles. That part you still have to load as stated manually. I'm sure one day if possible the applink link will include Cycles as well. There might be a way to link the internal renderer textures to Cycles but I will have to look around to see if it is possible. The Cuda toolkit 4.2 (64 bit version) or newer must be installed for Cycles GPU rendering. http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Doc:2.6/Manual/Render/Cycles/GPU_Rendering If anyone has other good tutorials feel to add them here... Advanced Member bisenberger Posted June 5, 2013 Advanced Member Report Share Posted June 5, 2013 The Cuda toolkit 4.2 (64 bit version) or newer must be installed for Cycles GPU rendering.http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Doc:2.6/Manual/Render/Cycles/GPU_Rendering I think this only applies if: On Mac OS X ( pre 2.66a* ), no CUDA GPU is availableSince 2.66a, Blender OSX comes with precompiled cuda kernels ( kernel_sm_yx.cubin ), you still have to install the CUDA driver (any recent version). For earlier versions, you need to install Xcode (command line tools are sufficient), the CUDA toolkit 4.2 (exactly this version), and the CUDA driver (any recent version). Xcode can be installed from the App Store. After Xcode is installed you also need to install its command line tools. This is done by starting Xcode, going to the Preferences, and then under Downloads installing the command line tools. If it still doesn't work, ensure that in the Energy Saver preferences, the automatic graphics switching is disabled and the fastest GPU is selected. Also ensure you do not have other CUDA toolkit versions installed. Works fine on Windows 7 and 8 with latest drivers and Cuda toolkit NOT installed. Reputable Contributor digman Posted June 5, 2013 Author Reputable Contributor Report Share Posted June 5, 2013 Is cuda now included in the official release of 2.67b for windows, mac and linux from Blender's site or are those builds from www.graphicall.org? I simply do not know... @ AbnRanger... I understand your direction in a tutorial, I was just posting some links because some were asking for basic tutorials on blender also... Advanced Member michalis Posted June 6, 2013 Advanced Member Report Share Posted June 6, 2013 Now concerning the applink, you can load your model into Blender and the correct textures will be loaded for the Internal renderer but not for Cycles. There might be a way to link the internal renderer textures to Cycles but I will have to look around to see if it is possible. Indeed, However, the applink is still handy. You can jump into cycles, start building your nodes based shaders. When adding a texture, you don't need to upload it, it's there, on the dropdown menu of the node. The developers still working on a ubershader. Though I disagree with ready made nodes in cycles (I have my reasons anyway), this could be a solution for a new 3dc-blender-cycles applink. Nice thread start Digman. Don't search for cycles tutorials too much. I'll post some. (I'm an expert LOL)
Advanced Member Garagarape Posted June 6, 2013 Advanced Member Report Share Posted June 6, 2013 Digman, Michalis, Thanks a lot for this thread! I'll dive in Blender by watching the tutorials as soon as I can get rid of my company business things... Cheers!
Advanced Member michalis Posted June 7, 2013 Advanced Member Report Share Posted June 7, 2013 How to start a tutorial on cycles ... WOW, here what I found By DingTo, one of the few developers of cycles-blender. He starts presenting the open language, OSL, but wait, jump this and watch a nice tutorial on cycles nodes editor. My Cycles presentation from FMX 2013 is now online, I demoed Cycles there on a Dual Xeon CPU (16 cores, 32 threads), 32GB Ram and 2 Tesla K20 cards. Advanced Member michalis Posted June 9, 2013 Advanced Member Report Share Posted June 9, 2013 Why there is a 3d cursor in blender? Why on the left mouse click? Here's a funny video from a friend.
Reputable Contributor digman Posted June 9, 2013 Author Reputable Contributor Report Share Posted June 9, 2013 LOL, I always get annoyed with that 3D cursor even though it has a lot of good uses...
Advanced Member michalis Posted June 10, 2013 Advanced Member Report Share Posted June 10, 2013 It is the pivot point. Extremely useful Many haven't realize it but in edit mode, pivot to 3dcursor, select with lasso, have proportional editing On, connected mode. This is a wonderful posing tool. No masks needed. You can always change the left-right buttons. Not a good suggestion though. It conflicts with the "emulate 3 button mouse". Which happens to be very handy to wacom users. Advanced Member michalis Posted June 10, 2013 Advanced Member Report Share Posted June 10, 2013 I'm wondering Abn, How to start. From 0 level? What about a hangout google meeting? At least, it will be fun. I'll keep suggesting to all blender newbies. http://gryllus.net/Blender/3D.html Just to have an idea on navigating, editing etc. Not for rendering of course.
