Javis
I've been reading up on announcement of the super cluster Laniakea, it's really intriguing how they mapped it. My dad and I have been watching the skies since... Well, our whole lives. It's an amazing time to be an astronomer (or an amateur one, as it were). Thanks for sharing the video. I hadn't seen it yet. Contributor ajz3d Posted September 10, 2014 Contributor Report Share Posted September 10, 2014 Actually, the girl is slightly wrong. Not "some areas are empty, dark voids", but most of the areas are empty, dark voids. The distances between the galaxies are so vast, that in most 'observation' points in the universe, the light coming from the galaxies (and even super-clusters) is so weak, a human wouldn't even be able to register it with his eyes, and thus - would only see a pure black nothingness before him. Scares the shit out of me, whenever I imagine myself in one of those places. Galaxies constitute only a tiny, miny fraction of the universe. We, with all of our problems are so incredible small and insignificant when compared to the vastness of universe, that sometimes I wish humanity should re-think its behaviour, and think in a bigger picture. Anyone recalls a photo of Earth called the "Pale Blue Dot" taken from the Voyager from 6 billion kilometres? To think that on this small pixel so much suffering and so much wondrous things happened in such short notice... is mind blowing. Because what does 2,6 millions years of humanity and 1.08 x 1012 cubic kilometers (I copied this from Wikipedia!) of Earth's volume mean when compared to universe's age and volume? If you've answered 'nothing', then you're right. ... On second thoughts, we all might be just digital assets of some futuristic IT system. And whenever you looked for your keys, and found them later in the spot you have already searched through, might mean the system was overloaded and didn't render them in that place the last time you looked them for. Shit, just take a triple-A CGI. Add to it a couple more years in neural networks development, and we (humans) might create ourselves new virtual beings. And they will eventually create their own virtual beings. And those beings will create their own... And so on. The cycle can go forever, until the "parent" universe explodes, someone pulls the plug out - upstream the chain, or there's a major power shortage somewhere near the HD 140283 star (considered to be the oldest in the Milky Way).
