Hey Everyone,

I've been slogging away for the last four weeks making a character for the monthly character challenge over at Polycount.  I sculpted her body and clothing in 3D-Coat but only just realised today that I haven't posted anything here.

So, mega dump :)

First up I did a model sheet in Inkscape based on the provided reference (the one on the left):

Then I sculpted her body using this (took about 5 hrs):

For overall texturing I use a procedural workflow in 3ds Max, this is what it looks like when it's done and brought back into 3D-Coat:

Once I've got the body texture done I use Gimp to mix in a face photo and a maxscript for 3ds Max called textools to fit it to the existing UV layout:

For clothing I make base meshes by just copying parts of the body and shaping them as needed (in 3ds Max):

For the coat here I used a combination of shell and turbosmooth to make it thick enough to import into 3D-Coat and sculpt:

(I used cloth simulation for the leg warmers then retopologised them in 3ds Max)

Figuring out how to get a big bunch wool look was... hard :/  In the end I settled on this michellin man approach:

Here it is back in 3ds Max on Cocoa, not looking too bad:

Here it is now with a basic wool texture on it combined with the normals baked from the sculpting:

And now I'm up to her hair, yay! (it's been a long four weeks).

By the way, here is a close up of her face and eye textures:

Rough hair base down:

Once I've got this looking a bit nicer I'll scatter a bunch of the thinner hair strips around to make the hair do messier like in the reference (see first pic).

Not sure what the etiquette is for posting progress on projects where you're not using 3D-Coat for everything - let me know if it's a problem :)

Awesome work!  Great to see your process.  I too thought the head was looking a little big.  But it works when you added in the hair.

Nice stuff!

Thanks everyone,

It was a relief to get her modelling and texturing done, that's for sure.

I still hope to continue her through to UE4 as a playable character too, but it'll have to wait for a bit work is at the pointy end of things at the moment...
