Rotate brush or Stencil Possible...?

Is there a way to scale the brush or a loaded stencil along one axis??

Also while I am at it, when I use the erase tool while painting it erases my paint (which is good) but it also erases the underlying base texture I guess, so it looks like I am looking right through my model??

Thanks so much

Can't scale you brush that way, but you can with a material or mask (same as stencil in Mudbox) using the preview panel. Use the little scale icon, 2nd from the right. On the next question, hard to say without some kind of screen recording to see what it is you're doing (steps you're taking). When you hide the layer you are trying to erase, is the "underlying texture" on that layer?
