Member Coffee Posted August 1, 2015 Member Report Share Posted August 1, 2015 I saved an obj with catmull smoothing then imported into 3dc with the option "auto-smoothing", max angle 180. The mesh is not smoothed, neither is the UV map. :-( ?
Member Coffee Posted August 1, 2015 Author Member Report Share Posted August 1, 2015 Actually I it's not 3DC's fault, imported into Keyshot with same problem. I upgraded Modo to 901 recently which I'm sure is the problem but no idea how to fix it.
Contributor TimmyZDesign Posted August 1, 2015 Contributor Report Share Posted August 1, 2015 I think you might be confusing Catmull-Clark subdivision surface smoothing, with simply smoothing normals. The 3DC auto-smoothing algorithm is for smoothing normals, not smoothing the surface by subdividing the mesh.

What's more is, when you apply a SubD modifier in your app, and then export it, All you've done is increase Poly count before importing. It's not coming in as the low poly mesh (minus the SubD modifier) you see in your host app. OBJ files don't store Catmull Clark edge-weighting and such. Member Coffee Posted August 5, 2015 Author Member Report Share Posted August 5, 2015 Not true. In Modo there is the option to subdivide the mesh increasing the poly count using various subdivision methods, or the option to smooth the normals by the same algorithm but not increasing the poly count. With that aside, when I import a low poly mesh into 3DC, how can I smooth the mesh without subdividing the geometry ?

When you apply a SubD modifier > add Subdivision levels > export, you get an OBJ with that subdivided level of polygons. It doesn't store a low poly state and a SubD state. Whether you smooth the normals or not, beforehand, is another issue.

Try various options there until you get what you want. The various options are described here: http://www.3d-coat.com/wiki/index.php/1.1_Importing_Meshes
