Does 3DCoat have an equivalent to Photoshops brush painting modes (ie. Linear Dodge (Add), Multiply, etc.), or are blending modes limited to just whole layers?

The third brush down the tool panel (Paint Room has similar capabilities as the burn and dodge, blur, etc. if that's what you mean. and as Carlosa said, layers have practically all the blending modes PS has.

Yea the Color Operations brush (I believe that's what it's called) is useful, however afaik there's no way to make it create paint, only modify it? It can't be used non-destructively on its own layer. And if you create a layer with a dedicated blending mode you're still limited (For instance, try building up to white via an Add blend layer from a dark color; can't be done without creating several duplicates of the layer afterwords and merging them all down which means no real preview of how it'll look while working since afaik there's no such thing as instanced layers in 3DC(?)).
