philnolan3d
This is pretty impressive 3D program. I haven't messed with it too much but it handles a ton of formats, modeling, animation, and rendering. and it's free. http://clara.io
Advanced Member geo_n Posted December 24, 2013 Advanced Member Report Share Posted December 24, 2013 (edited) Its going to be expensive. Their other products are a bit high priced imo. Lots of software going the subscription or rental scheme lately. Edited December 24, 2013 by geo_n
philnolan3d
Ah, that makes sense.
New Member Ben Houston Posted December 26, 2013 New Member Report Share Posted December 26, 2013 Its going to be expensive. The above statement from geo_n could not be more wrong. I wish people just didn't make things up out of thin air and then attack us with these made up facts. We are going to be mostly free (what you see right now on Clara.io is free and we plan to keep it free) and when we do introduce paying options for premium features (like rendering with V-Ray) they are going to be really low cost, like $10-$20/month (which is what I said at SIGGRAPH this year when asked.) If you want to render on dozens of machines for days at a time, we will have to charge you based on usage, but I think that is understandable as every other online render farm company does that as well. But we are trying otherwise to make it as cheap or free as possible. I think comparing the pricing for specialty/high end/studio-oriented VFX plugins compared to a mass market product like Clara.io is comparing apples and oranges. These are going after different customer bases.

The post above was written at 3am as my daughter (who happens to be named Clara) was up at night. At times like that I take things more personally than I should. In the clear light of day I realize that we haven't made this clear at all on our website -- there is nothing there about pricing at all. So we should take this as constructive criticism and add some details about our pricing strategy and how it differs from what we have done previously.
Advanced Member chingchong Posted December 26, 2013 Advanced Member Report Share Posted December 26, 2013 @Ben Houston: Is there a recommended browser for using Clara? I tried with firefox and it was really slow. some recommendations?
philnolan3d
@Ben Than ks for clarifying @Chingchong Really? I used it in Firefox and it was fine. Perhaps be sure Firefox is updated and no plugins acting up.

philnolan3d
That's weird, I've never had that happen. I don't think this uses Flash anyway. it ran on my tablet without asking me to load Flash. Of course I couldn't do a lot with it due to the touch screen but what it did do was pretty smooth for a 3 year old tablet.

I was looking at your other products after seeing this on fxguide. The other products that I was referring to. http://exocortex.com/ I'm also not a fan of node locked license. Modo, 3dcoat, lightwave, etc provide a more flexible license.
New Member Ben Houston Posted January 27, 2014 New Member Report Share Posted January 27, 2014 I'm also not a fan of node locked license. Modo, 3dcoat, lightwave, etc provide a more flexible license. Exocortex's desktop products are all available with floating licenses. BTW here is what is possible using Clara.io these days: 1. Here is a model that you can load in our embeddable player (click here to view it in 3D): 2. I rendered this using V-Ray and Clara.io: This is a model in the editor viewport: Here is a Buddha model rendered with sub surface scattering (although it is our older UI look and feel): And lastly, here is our more recently UI look and feel with a STL file I imported, lit and animated: We've added more than 2000 features and bug fixes since August 2013. New Member Ben Houston Posted January 29, 2014 New Member Report Share Posted January 29, 2014 Looks nice so far After only 10 minutes explore this I think i Know how it work . very easy to use for me. except, I still dont figure How I use this Bone thing, Also I found not information in the Guide. A little bit slow for me Thanks for trying it out. Bone is mostly used for importing Skinned characters via FBK. In that context it works fine. But using it for creating skinned characters within Clara.io from scratch isn't really recommended yet. It needs some polish. I'd be interested in knowing which part of Clara.io you found slow so we can optimize it. Take care, Ben Houston
