New mockup

Hi there

been a long time 3D-Coat user and I love it for its sculpting and painting abilities.

One of the things I never liked was its user interface, I think it's outdated and inconsistent in some ways, so I did a first mockup of how 3DC could look in the future.

Please tell what you think so far.

What I still want to do is for example to design a new brush panel that consolidates the brush options from other places of the interface, as well as better organized preset panels.

Hi Zest!, gotta respect anyone willing to try improving a huge interface like 3DCoat's! Integration/consolidation/consistency are much needed indeed, but man it seems like a looong hard road to travel...

Vertical tool tabs would be nice as long as we are able to select/display two or more at the same time (with ctrl or shift?) and we are able to hide the tabs itself.

Room tabs integrated into the title bar are not very easy on the eyes, but it would be nice to save the vertical space and give the viewport a little bit more room integrating the viewport icons in the viewport, makes sense. It would be nice to be able to hide/collapse those icons too, like the tools panel.

On the other hand, stats in the viewport with that layout... would be nice as an option, but I would rather leave them in a line like they are now, but in the bottom of the viewport with more spacing between the different info. But again, saving the vertical space in the bottom would be nice.

Now, speaking of saving space, I really hope this is not a mockup for a general layout, because that huge empty space would be a big no no.

P.S.: I love the simplificated logo, it has better readabilty as an icon than the current one!

And that was my two cents.

Regards.

There's only one UI upgrade I really want and that is the ability to offload all tabs, menus, attribute editors etc over to a second monitor. I realize that there's speed and efficiency problems to be dealt with in demanding programs that handle tens of millions of polygons or voxels in a window; neither  Zbrush, Mudbox or 3d Coad allow for offloading menus or tabs to second monitors but artists need a big canvas and I think it's bad to have anything impinging on that canvas. I'd love to have one screen of nothing but viewspace and the other screen to be all my tool menus and tabs.

Eventually I'll have three monitors set up like this. It would be nice if all the administrative stuff were run on a different setup than the work window so they could run on different speeds or something like that.

New version of my 3D-Coat 5.0 UI Mockup.

Unfortunately, the forum scales uploaded images down, so I had to put my image on an external hoster.

I've captioned some of the parts of the image, the rest should be quite self-explanatory of how I think a UI redesign could work and look like.
