I usually break my model up in LW first: layers, surfaces, uv-maps. I try to limit the objects to one UV map per LW layer. Then import the lwo into 3DC and start working. If you don't have the PLG UV plug-ins you can use 3DC's UV-mapping (or just the auto-mapping when you import) to get some pretty good unwrapping.

It really depends on what you're working on though. You mention you're texturing your model, if you don't need to sculpt much I would suggest just importing it for direct (per-pixel) painting and trying out some of the tools, then let us know if you have more specific questions about gettting your results out to LW. You can also get the manual from help>user manual, which covers some of the basics of using layers, fill tool, stroke types, etc.

There are a few tutorials in the tutorials forum, and geothefaust had a free online demo this past Saturday. Perhaps you can drop him a PM and ask how you can download the class.

Hope this helps you get started.

Here's a tutorial I just made for going from LW to 3DC and back with Per Pixel painting if that helps.

BTW if you don't have PLG for LightWave I highly recommend it:
