Please help me with painting normals w/ smart materials

Hi guys! I'm making a smart material to add dents to my object.
Whether I use the procedural noise tool, or load a BW map, black is always being pushed back and white forward.
How can I get smart materials to act like Stencils, where black is unaffected?
Here's what my issue looks like:
