Version 3.7 unusable due to crashes

Hi all. I've been using 3D Coat for a little while now (all the 3.n versions), and never really had a problem with it until I upgraded to 3.7.

Now it has become completely unusable, crashing even as soon as I start to do anything at all in the program. It seems to crash at the same rate in both DX and GL versions.

To give a general idea, I tried to use the program this evening to begin working on a model of a pea plant for an outside project. I started it up in voxel sculpting and turned to the snakes tool. I started pulling the snakes out for the stem, and 3D coat crashed, telling me the program had become unstable, that the system had run out of memory and I should try increasing my virtual memory. I pulled up a previous 3D Coat project (also one that never gave any grief) and started to mess around with it to see what would happen, and it crashed again after a few mere seconds.

I had just finished up a long session of working in Maya 2010, encountering no such problems whatsoever, and had turned that program off.

I don't work with 3D Coat as often as I'd like (my 3D time is primarily spent in Maya), and like I said had never really experienced that much trouble with it when I did use it. After updating to 3.7, I can't seem to do anything at all. So I'm asking because I don't really have the experience to troubleshoot this type of thing efficiently.

I have a Dell Precision m6500 with 8GB RAM, a NVidia Quadro 3800 card, and it's been handling what I've been throwing at it until now.

That is odd. Have you tried downloading the latest build (3.7.02C)? Also, what OS are you using? Win, Linux, MAC? Sometimes there are issues specific to those OS versions. What I usually try to do is go to MY DOCUMENTS > 3D COAT> and delete the Options.XML file. Re-install the latest build and see if that doesn't help. Sometimes that file will get corrupted and cause bug-like behavior. I'm using 3.7.02 WIndows 64 w/CUDA. I think there is a bug with CUDA causing crashes when you load some older files, because when I turn it off (in the Voxel menu), I can open the file OK and then just turn CUDA back on. He is aware of it, and there should be a fix forthcoming.

Hi AbnRanger. Thanks for the reply.

I tried deleting the XML file but to no avail. I also tried installing 3.7.01B also to no avail. It continues to crash in the manner previously described as soon as I try to do anything at all on this machine (the memory error, "The program has become unstable...", etc).

The problem occurs on a Dell Precision M6500 running Windows 7 Professional with Intel Core i7 Q720 with 8GB RAM and a Nvidia Quadro FX 3800M graphics card. My other apps seem to run just fine, and I had been using Maya for a long time the very same day these messages began to appear.

Like I said, I'd never run into difficulty using 3D Coat with the previous 3.n versions.

Since we can install the license on up to three machines, I tried one of the other machines I put it on (a Dell T3500 also running Windows 7), and Lo and Behold it seems to work just fine on that one.

However the M6500 is my 17" laptop and it's portable, so it's essential to have all my programs on it.

With that being the case, it sounds like it is having issues with your graphic card driver. Try updating the driver on the card, and using DX instead of GL. If there is still no resolution, then e-mail Andrew directly, at support@3d-coat.com. He can look for your crash report and see where the problem is.

I just installed the non-CUDA edition of 3.7.01B and it works. So, yeah, I guess it is some kind of graphics card issue.

Thanks for the input. I guess until I get the card issue sorted out I'll use the non-CUDA version (I needed to use the program immediately, along with the Maya app-link).

I tried to send Andrew some error reports when they happened, but I don't know if my browser blocked them from going through. I guess I'll email him directly if I need more help.

I see Nvidia updated the driver quite recently, on December 19, 2011. Have you recently updated your video driver to something newer or change any of it's preferences? This is the kind of thing that can cause weird behavior to appear out of nowhere (forcing AA and/or Aniso to be enabled for example). I'm stuck using older drivers for my card because of a bug they introduced, one they refuse to admit to or fix. Thankfully I don't use my PC for gaming so sticking with older drivers isn't a problem. Don't know if any of this will help, but I figured it doesn't hurt to mention it.
