I'm not a programmer, but if I had to guess I'd wager in addition to choosing and knowing a good programming language for it (like C for example?), a solid understanding of algebra, geometry (which has quite a few branches), and trigonometry is needed just for starters. One place to start might be to examine open source code written by others.
