Contributor Tony Nemo Posted December 16, 2013 Contributor Report Share Posted December 16, 2013 I want to close this junction (in Surface mode) and I reckon I could use a primitive but how about the new Voxextrude tool? Anybody try it out? What would be the preferred method for joining these two parts?
Advanced Member alvordr Posted December 21, 2013 Advanced Member Report Share Posted December 21, 2013 Tony, Hey. I don't recommend using Voxel Extrude. So far, I've not seen it work for anything I would think it should. I tend to bridge using a primitive. You might consider the Bridge Tool, but I believe that's in the SM, not VM. Contributor Tony Nemo Posted December 21, 2013 Author Contributor Report Share Posted December 21, 2013 Yeah, I bridged using a primitive in voxel mode. I found boolean operations in Surface mode occasionally run into an self intersection error that doesn't allow the booleans and the "Remove Self Intersections" command in the Voxel menu doesn't fix it. Advanced Member alvordr Posted December 22, 2013 Advanced Member Report Share Posted December 22, 2013 (edited) Yeah, I've found that, as well. If I want to sculpt in "Surface Mode"-like operations, I'll simply do it and quickly go back to Voxels or just do it in ZBrush. I don't personally like Surface mode for much more than the occasional smoothing or some other rarely used tool (for me that is). While others swear by it, it's not for me. If you have questions about Voxel mode, assuming you tend to stay in Surface Mode, I've become fairly well versed in it. I, too, find the Remove Self Intersections command doesn't work very well. Advanced Member alvordr Posted December 22, 2013 Advanced Member Report Share Posted December 22, 2013 LOL, interestingly I just ran into the same thing, but where I normally just use a primitive, I tried the bridge tool in SM. It was useless and confusing.
Advanced Member alvordr Posted December 22, 2013 Advanced Member Report Share Posted December 22, 2013 By the way, I forgot that one other thing you could try, if you want to bridge something, is to use something like the Toothpaste tool. As long as you have a surface underneath what you're trying to "bridge," it should allow you to paint a glob of clay across the gap.
Contributor Tony Nemo Posted December 22, 2013 Author Contributor Report Share Posted December 22, 2013 Yes, I've tried "globs" myself but with architectural elements, it involves a lot of smoothing. So I now put a lot of planning into what's next so that all booleans are completed in voxel mode.
Advanced Member alvordr Posted December 22, 2013 Advanced Member Report Share Posted December 22, 2013 I can see why that method wouldn't work for your purposes, but most of my recent modeling has been organic, so it works for me. Anyway, I'm glad you found a way to method that works.
