Direct X vs Open GL version

I don't understand why the installer launcher recommends OpenGL over Direct X for faster cards. I have a geforce 580 its got tons of Direct X support (as do all geforce cards) shouldn't 3DC be faster on this/these cards? Are there any ways we can do stress tests with 3DC to test it with some output/feedback more than just "feels faster". It'd also be a way we could tell is something is wrong with a version or file. Maya has a FPS HUD toggle, maybe something like that?

I did a test and OpenGL is much more responsive but I'm still confused as to why. All that Direct X advertises is how well it handles millions of poly's etc. And isn't OpenGL getting old? I'm a little ignorant of the details as I'm not a developer, but seems odd to me.
