Jet thruster thing

A while back one job required me to model a detailed F/A 18 Hornet jet. One thing I had a lot of trouble with in LightWave was these thruster things on the back of the engine. I remember messing with them for hours trying to get it right. Tonight I saw one of those planes on TV and had an idea to do it in 3DC. So I tried it and it's just rough but I got it done in just a few minutes. Unfortunately there was a little voxel bug, but otherwise it worked out nicely.

This looks about right. I think they need to overlap though. its kind of like an iris system that can shape the exhaust stream. I've seen thrust vectoring nozels do that anywho

If Lightwave supports ring arrays this will be very easy to do. Actually it'd be quite possable in silo aswell. I could make one in silo for you if you like

Yeah I realized the overlapping after I posted the referenced image. Oops! lol LW does support radial array's but not in realtime like 3DC. You have to guess at some settings and hit Enter, if that's not right, Undo, guess at more settings, etc. This was also a fun experiment in sculpting hard surface shapes in 3DC.

Yeah Voxels are quite liberation arent they :)

So far as ring array settings go you can work most of the settings out before hand if you know what to do.

If you create a cylinder and note its radial segments, lets say its 12, scale down and add a slight twist to one of the caps, now delete the caps. Then subdivide and refine it. Now select 1 of the refined segments(as in what was once a single face) + an extra half of 1 of the original segments for the overlap. Invert the selection and delete the rest.

Rotate the remain polys on their y around their cog a few degrees the create a ring array at with 12 segments at 30 degree intervals (360/12) if you create these as instances it would make a lot of sense. Anyway that will get you what you want.
