Macintosh - killing monitors

I have an IntelPro Mac and two 24 inch monitors set to 1920 X 1080. When I open 3d-Coat my monitors go to black and it requires restarting the machine to get them back. This does not happen when I set my monitors to a smaller size (say 1600 X 1000). Somehow, it seems a software instruction is sending an illegal command to my monitor card (it's an ATI 1900 XT with 512 MB of VRAM) which causes the monitor card to fail. Has anyone else experienced this problem? I work a lot in video and with Lightwave, and don't have this problem with any other software (except for a pool game that I downloaded - same results).

All the latest OS and Software - 8 MB RAM, plenty of HD space.
