Contributor ajz3d Posted August 21, 2014 Contributor Report Share Posted August 21, 2014 Hello. I'm in a need of setting up a blog/portfolio website. Preferably (but not necessarily) a free service. I'm leaning towards a Wordpress based site with a commercial theme applied to it. I even have my eyes on a nice and pretty cheap virtual hosting service. However, using Wordpress on a hosting site implies I would need to take care of all the updates and technical stuff in order to keep the site up to date. And I simply wouldn't have time for it. But the benefits of this solution are, that I could tailor the site completely to my needs and, what's more, I could place my Intranet KB site there and sell my olde' home Intranet server. I also thought about Google+, but it feels very awkward to use as a portfolio site. I guess it's rather more of a social networking site than a place for a portfolio? It also looks as almost non-customisable. So what would you guys recommend? Or maybe the initial idea of the WP+hosting service isn't bad? Contributor ajz3d Posted August 21, 2014 Author Contributor Report Share Posted August 21, 2014 Thank you for your time, Carlos. On Behance site (which, by the way, Adobe is trying to force down our throats heh, heh!), artists link up their home websites, so the site must be lacking of some functionality. Blogging perhaps is most likely the thing that is missing here. ArtStation. Not possible to blog here too, as far as I can tell. Many great artists post their work here, but the site lacks in functionality and customisation. (Off-topic: http://www.artstation.com/artist/Yangji - beautiful digital paintings that caught my eye almost immediately after I entered the site) DrawCrowd: Feels the same as ArtStation. Or maybe it's ArtStation that feels the same as DrawCrowd? It's difficult to tell. Generally, those sites feel very chaotic, at least for me. With little to none customisation available and no blogging features at all. I apologise that I forgot to mention this in my first post, but I also need some form of a file repository and code syntax highlighting in blog entries. None of those sites seem to offer this, as they seem to be purely focused on artwork presentation. I kind o'feel that this topic I created was completely unnecessary, and it was only another way to reassure me that I should start up my own site, instead of relying on some ready-solutions. Nevertheless, I'm still very open to your experiences with portfolio sites and to more recommendations.
Javis
I personally would go with Wordpress. It suits any kind of site, and is easily extensible. You can create custom post/page types, for example a portfolio, code repository, blog, etc.. It's quite the solution really.

Best option. on name cheap. wordpress has server access privileges so it updates itself.

Contributor ajz3d Posted March 7, 2015 Author Contributor Report Share Posted March 7, 2015 (edited) Thank you guys for all your suggestions. I really appreciate them. I wasn't wasting time myself and visited a bunch of dedicated forums and I finally decided what to do. I'm going the WP and virtual server route for maximum flexibility and freedom. For now, OVH hosting got my attention due to their relatively cheap prices, global coverage and infinite monthly data transfer. 10,5 bucks/month for a prioritized virtual server with 500GB storage sounds OK to me (that's a price of one cinema ticket), but we'll see how it fares performance-wise after I actually buy the subscription... Anyway, I already bought a WP skin and I'm in the process of building the local version of the site, so there's no turning back. Only the hosting provider may be a subject of change. Javis
Excellent choice. That is what I've been doing for years, too. And prefer it.
