I know Andrew, Raul and the other developers on staff have a lot on their plate, but man...it sure could make some headlines if 3D Coat used OpenSubdiv as the new mesh engine outside the Sculpt Room. I really think the Retopo Room should be merged with the Tweak Room, and use OpenSubdiv as the mesh engine.

Merging the two rooms would allow the user to make modeling edits easily, the user could subdivide the mesh that is in the Paint Room, if they need (while still keeping the original low poly version in stored memory...like 3D Coat currently does), for better mesh sculpting/morph target edits. Using OpenSubdiv would certainly answer the performance issues that have long been part of the Tweak Room.

In the same process, it would be great to see all the standard Surface Mode brushes mirrored to this newly merged room (called the Poly Edit room?). If the user is able to step up and down SubD levels in this room, it would be a great alternative to using the Sculpt room because currently it is too much hassle going back and forth between the Paint Room to Sculpt room to make any sculpting changes/edits. Or if a user wants to texture paint a model they imported into the Paint Room, and decide at some point they just want to do a moderate amount of sculpting on the model. Currently, the Tweak Room isn't a great option for that.

We should let Raul know about this!

It is supposedly easier to implement OpenSubdiv now because of :

"a new low-level layer called Sdc (SubDivision Core). This layer encapsulates the full set of applicable options, the formulae required to support semi-sharp creasing, the formulae for the refinement masks of each subdivision scheme, etc."

We could then have three types of sculpting in the Sculpt Room (voxel, dynamic tesselation, and OpenSubdiv).

It would also probably be easier to finally get Sculpt Layers if OpenSubdiv was implemented.
