Member Mike DaPrimate Posted October 2, 2014 Member Report Share Posted October 2, 2014 Here's the dumb question of the day. Why have I noticed people using this sort of format "graememcdoug (at) aol (dotcom)" to share their emails? Does it have to do with spam? Reputable Contributor AbnRanger Posted October 2, 2014 Reputable Contributor Report Share Posted October 2, 2014 Here's the dumb question of the day. Why have I noticed people using this sort of format "graememcdoug (at) aol (dotcom)" to share their emails? Does it have to do with spam? Pretty much.Guess there are searchbots for spammers, that glean e-mails with search criteria such as....screwUspammers@gmail.com.
Advanced Member Aleksey Posted October 2, 2014 Advanced Member Report Share Posted October 2, 2014 i think most spam bot crawlers can tell when someone write (at) or [at] or whatever else they make up.. its not that difficult.. just make emailing the person a pain. New Member Decade Posted October 2, 2014 Author New Member Report Share Posted October 2, 2014 Really ? I hoped doing that would protect me from that. I just copied what I saw other people doing.
Advanced Member Aleksey Posted October 2, 2014 Advanced Member Report Share Posted October 2, 2014 it's really not a difficult programming feat... ( especially compared to something like 3d coat). search: @, (at), [at], then some simple string operations to find and replace. first step to avoid spam is switch to gmail
Contributor ajz3d Posted October 2, 2014 Contributor Report Share Posted October 2, 2014 (edited) It's a form of a basic protection, true. But nevertheless a protection. All, but some very basic mining bots will decipher it with ease though. How about this? john.email.is(at)joh(at)(dot)yahoo.n.(at)boxdoe@(at)gmailaol(dotcom)@yahoo.com * what colours are roses? Last one is sunflower. This might be a bit more difficult to decipher by a bot because it contains at least two patterns that could be interpreted as e-mails. So, if a bot doesn't know the answer to both questions or is not aware that there are any, it will most likely go the easy way and pick either john@yahoo.com or ail.is@gmail.com. For additional protection one can post it as a distorted image file (so OCRs can have some something to process and waste spammer's CPU power). But it's difficult to read by a human being and some more sophisticated algorithms would probably extract every possible e-mail address combination from this string anyway. I think e-mail spam is something we have to live with. Like an occasional headache, flu or cold. But, like Aleksey said, I don't remember when was the last time I received spam on GMail. Though they analyse your mail and track you, but everything comes at a price I guess... Edited October 2, 2014 by ajz3d

Advanced Member Aleksey Posted October 2, 2014 Advanced Member Report Share Posted October 2, 2014 i think someone who doesnt like me signed my up to one of those "spam me with everything lists" that are ussually used for testing spam filters. and for about a month i was getting 3-5 spam emails/day getting into my inbox. But gmail learns eventually. now i get like 1000 spam emails a day, but only maybe one a week gets into my inbox. and they are the perverse ones like this:
