philnolan3d
I'm finally replacing my 6 year old computer and ordered this one, which should arrive on Friday, Jan 31st. http://www.amazon.com/Asus-M51AC-US002S-ASUS-Desktop/dp/B00D440T3C/ Everything in it looks pretty great to me except for the video card, It's an nVidia GT 640. It almost looks like my current GeForce GTX 470 might be higher end even though it's a couple years old. What do you guys think, should I swap the video cards when the new PC arrives? It almost looks like my current GeForce GTX 470 might be higher end even though it's a couple years old. What do you guys think, should I swap the video cards when the new PC arrives? Yes...I would swap the card. If you turn wireframe on in the Voxel Room, Kepler cards REALLY struggle with it. I think it has to do with the reduced Memory Bus. They took a big step back with Kepler, for some silly reason. But they moved back to 384 with the 780 and Titan. The 770 is deceptively named. It is not on the same architecture as the 780 and Titan. It's still a Kepler card....basically a 680 with a few small enhancements. If you can't afford a 780 (which have dropped a lot in price lately...down into the 400-500 range), buy a used GTX 580 3GB on Ebay...it will outperform that 640 in 3D Coat...and anytime you use a GPU renderer (CUDA). philnolan3d
After I just dropped $1000 on the PC I don't think I'll be buying anything new for a while. Good thoughts on the Kepler though, I didn't even know about that I just noticed that the number of cores was much smaller than the one I currently have, which I thought more was better for Cuda. My only concern with the swap is whether the power supply has enough juice in the new PC. I'll have to look further into it.

Advanced Member Aleksey Posted January 29, 2014 Advanced Member Report Share Posted January 29, 2014 with nvidia anything below the X60 is pretty much equivilant to integrated graphics. so your 470 will easily outperform a 640 or 740 or an 840. on the bright side according to this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883220337 you have an extra pci slot in there. so you should be able to plug in both video cards and hook up 4 monitors if you want to
Reputable Contributor AbnRanger Posted January 29, 2014 Reputable Contributor Report Share Posted January 29, 2014 Off the shelf systems always tend to skimp on the graphics card. The Motherboard and PSU are two other areas. That's why I always build my own. I typically budget about $1500, to get good components all the way around. philnolan3d
I don't think I'll be plugging in an extra video card. I barely have room for one monitor let alone 4. Don: Yeah I figured it would be a lower end card since it came built-in.
